Canoe Trips
Northwest Outagamie County has some of the best
quiet-water canoeing around. The Wolf River is slow and winds through heavily
wooded terrain. There are numerous parks and boat landings throughout the route
from Shawano to New London. The Embarrass River is also very scenic and
largely undeveloped. It is not as wide as the Wolf and its current is
slower. However, access to the Embarrass is from bridge crossings only.

Embarrass River - for a full day of
leisurely paddling (10 hours), you can put your canoe in at County Highway F and
float downstream into New London. The trip is approximately 20 miles in
length. For a shorter trip, you can access the river at Spurr Road and
float into New London. This trip is about 4 miles long and takes
approximately 2 hours. Keep your eyes open for possible local wildlife,
including bald eagles, osprey, belted kingfishers, muskrats and turtles.

Wolf River - Public landings are located in Shawano, Shiocton and New London. In the New London area, beginners can rent fiberglass canoes and tubes for family fun on both the Wolf and Little Wolf rivers. A trip down the lower Wolf can be continued through Lakes Poygan and Butte des Morts to Lake Winnebago. The river is well-known for spring walleye and white bass fishing. Possible trips include:
|
From highway 156 (Waupaca County) south to highway F (Leeman) is roughly an 8 mile trip that takes about 4 hours to complete.
|
From highway F south to the County boat landing at Koepke Park, which is just a few miles north of Shiocton, is 9.6 miles long and takes between 5 and 6 hours to complete.
|
From Koepke Park to Barker Park in Shiocton is nearly 4.8 miles in length and takes between 2 and 3 hours to paddle.
|
From Shiocton to Stephensville boat landing on highway S is a 5.2 mile paddle that will also take between 2 and 3 hours to complete.
|
From Stephensville to the Buchman boat landing on highway M is another 4.6 miles, which will take 2 to 3 hours to paddle.
|
For a nice 3-4 hour trip, you can put in at the County Boat Landing on Highway M, just north of Hortonville and float into New London. |
Sections of the above listed trips can be linked together to make day-long excursions on the Wolf. For additional information and a map, click on the button below.
